With the prototype series of glass water carafes, the designer tries to freeze this instant in a shape that is natural, almost liquid. Once the carafe is filled up with water, it can be confused with its container in a play on reflections that makes it hard to distinguish the edge between shape and content.</em></span></p>

<p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; line-height: 15.0px; font: 11.0px Arial;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><em>A collection of ceramic artefacts inspired by the clandestine immigration in Sicily that today ‘replaced’ the Moorish one of the IX century when, due to this invasion, the tradition of majolica started in Italy and later in other European countries.</em></span></p>
<p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; line-height: 15.0px; font: 11.0px Arial;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><em>Moulding Tradition underlines the existing link between historical events and local culture and their translation into cultural artefacts. It aims to be ‘a statement on the ephemeral concept of tradition and shows the contradictions of a decadent culture’. </em></span></p>

<p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; line-height: 15.0px; font: 11.0px Arial;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><em>The series of objects on show are part of a project developed in collaboration with marine biologists from Aberystwyth University in Wales and is part of Julia Lohmann’s ongoing investigation into man and marine life. These objects are made from a range of materials, from plastic to porcelain and black clay to bronze, parts of which are submerged in seawater tanks to allow Bryozoa to settle on and co-design their surfaces. The resulting objects provide a glimpse of how nature converts manmade objects into new habitats and vessels, that are spreading organisms across the globe at unprecedented speed and scale.</em></span></p>

However, this collection transposes the grid system to fit within the domestic scale. The structure itself both encases and showcases elemental materials trapped within. A bare light bulb, caged within its respective void, reveals a lamp for instance. The grid, a tool heavily used in graphic design, is also used to compose the elements in an orderly manner. The play between the functional elements and the voids create three dimensional graphic compositions that cater to everyday use.</em></span></p>

<p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; line-height: 15.0px; font: 11.0px Arial;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><em>The Palindrome Series is a collection of furniture inspired by the concept of symmetry with each piece comprising of half mould and half cast. The Douglas wooden boards are assembled as a mould and then the composite casting material of chalk reinforced with glass fibre is layered inside. The wooden mould is then opened, turned inside out, laid side by side and fixed to the hardened cast creating furniture that have a mirrored half with the mirrored shape, texture and detail and with a Palindrome name cut into the wooden mould which results on the cast side in raised writing.</em></span></p>

<p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; line-height: 15.0px; font: 11.0px Arial;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><em>Pulp is a collection of vessels made out of paper pulp using discarded vessels as a positive mould. Using newspaper, glue and water, a mixture is made to be applied on the outer surface of the mould. After repeating the same process, the dried copy of the vessel is removed by cutting it into two pieces, gluing it together again and applying the last layers of the Pulp vessel. The vessel is treated with an inner epoxy resin coating to make it stronger and water resistant. </em></span></p>

<p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; line-height: 15.0px; font: 11.0px Arial;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><em>This project is a continuation of the Mugroso Series, based on photographic research which explored the hectic historical centre of Mexico City, portraying scenarios of improvisation and low resources where people find the way of putting bits and pieces together in order to compose functional everyday objects. The project explores the aesthetics and logic of this ‘system’ created by the locals who assemble objects using everyday waste and various pieces of material. The basic structure and the different elements of the armchair Mugrosita are tied together with rope knotted on a metallic grid to the back of the seat.</em></span></p>

<p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; line-height: 15.0px; font: 11.0px Arial;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">Il momento più affascinante della trasformazione del vetro &#8211; che come l’acqua quando viene lavorato è fluido, vivido e dalla forma in rapida trasformazione &#8211; è quando la materia ricerca il suo equilibrio confrontandosi con la forza di gravità. Con la serie di prototipi di caraffe in vetro, la designer cerca di bloccare proprio questo istante in una forma che risulti essere molto ‘naturale’, quasi liquida. L’acqua nelle caraffe una volta riempite si confonde con il contenitore in un gioco di riflessi che rende labile il confine tra forma e contenuto.</span></p>

<p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; line-height: 15.0px; font: 11.0px Arial;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">Una collezione di oggetti che si ispira al tema dell’immigrazione clandestina che oggi si ‘sostituisce’ in Sicilia a quella moresca del IX secolo, sottolineando i legami esistenti tra il formarsi di una cultura locale basata su eventi di carattere storico e la traduzione di questa cultura in oggetti d’uso. Il progetto mette in discussione il concetto di tradizione inteso come attitudine auto-referenziale e immutabile nel tempo, evidenziando le contraddizioni di una cultura decadente.</span></p>

<p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; line-height: 15.0px; font: 11.0px Arial;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">La serie di oggetti esposti fa parte di un progetto sviluppato in collaborazione con alcuni biologi marini della Aberystwyth University nel Galles ed è parte del percorso d’indagine di Julia Lohmann sui reciproci rapporti tra mondo marino e quello umano. Gli oggetti sono relitti ibridi fatti di materiali diversi come plastica, porcellana, argilla nera, bronzo, che vengono immersi in vasche di acqua salina e colonizzati da protozoi detti Briozoi, che ne ‘co-disegnano’ le superfici.</span></p>

La struttura stessa riveste e allo stesso tempo esibisce gli elementi materiali che vi sono intrappolati. Una lampadina spoglia, incastonata all’interno del vuoto che la circonda, si traduce così in lampada. La griglia, strumento molto usato in grafica, è anche un mezzo utile per una composizione ordinata delle parti. Questa sinergia tra elementi funzionali e relativi spazi circostanti crea dunque una composizione grafica tridimensionale fruibile nel quotidiano.</span></p>

Le assi in legno Douglas vengono assemblate in modo da formare una matrice al cui interno viene steso a strati il composto di gesso rinforzato con fibra di vetro. Lo stampo in legno viene aperto, rovesciato, affiancato e fissato al calco indurito andando così a creare degli arredi che per forma, texture e dettagli hanno una metà ‘specchiata’ nell’altra con in rilievo il nome palindromo inciso sullo stampo in legno.</span></p>

<p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; line-height: 15.0px; font: 11.0px Arial;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><em>Pulp </em>è una serie di recipienti interamente fabbricati con polpa di carta, che utilizza come matrice del vasellame di scarto. La collezione è nata dalla ricerca di materiali alternativi fabbricati con carta da macero. La combinazione della polpa di carta con altri elementi &#8211; come resina epossidica e agenti collanti &#8211; ha dato vita a un nuovo materiale dotato di caratteristiche proprie, con il quale creare una serie di recipienti di carta in grado di contenere l’acqua.</span></p>

<p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; line-height: 15.0px; font: 11.0px Arial;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">La seduta fa parte della <em>Mugroso Series</em>, una collezione che ispirata da una ricerca fotografica realizzata nel frenetico centro storico di Città del Messico, luogo in cui si manifestano capacità di improvvisazione con risorse minime. Il progetto esplora l’estetica e la logica alla base del ‘sistema’ ideato dagli abitanti locali, che assemblano oggetti d’uso quotidiano con scarti e frammenti di vari materiali. I diversi elementi componenti la seduta <em>Mugrosita </em>sono legati insieme con corde annodate alla griglia metallica dello schienale.</span></p>

<p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; line-height: 15.0px; font: 11.0px Arial;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><strong><em>TEN SMALL ATLASES </em></strong><em>is an exhibition that shows the experience of the IN Residence project, a thematic workshop that involves young international designers of recognised talent and even younger students, held in Torino every year since 2008 in the Residence Du Parc.</em></span></p>
<p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; line-height: 15.0px; font: 11.0px Arial;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><em>The exhibition focus is the </em><strong><em>design process</em></strong><em>, the way things come to be made. </em></span></p>
<p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; line-height: 15.0px; font: 11.0px Arial;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><em>Ten designers will show their visual vocabularies, creative strategies and dictionary of allusions based on which are conceived their displayed works. </em></span></p>
<p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; line-height: 15.0px; font: 11.0px Arial;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><em>Each designer is given a space to display the work and a collection of other objects, writings, drawings, images that influenced, inspired, compelled and encouraged the designer in creating the work. Ten dedicated small areas will collect thoughts that will show the creative process and tell the story about the conceiving of each designer’s work and therefore will appear like </em><strong><em>‘ten small atlases’</em></strong><em>. </em></span></p>

<p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; line-height: 15.0px; font: 11.0px Arial;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><strong>TEN SMALL ATLASES </strong>intende presentare al grande pubblico l’esperienza del progetto IN Residence, un programma di workshop tematici sul design contemporaneo che si svolge dal 2008 negli spazi del <em>Du Parc Residence </em>di Torino, coinvolgendo giovani designer di fama internazionale e gruppi di studenti selezionati.</span></p>
<p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; line-height: 15.0px; font: 11.0px Arial;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">Il <strong>processo creativo </strong>nel design attraverso il quale si giunge alla realizzazione dell’oggetto è il tema della mostra.</span></p>
<p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; line-height: 15.0px; font: 11.0px Arial;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">I dieci designer invitati esporranno i loro personali ‘vocabolari’ visivi, una raccolta di materiali utili a raccontare le fasi di ideazione e determinanti a rivelare le fonti d’ispirazione e i modelli di riferimento del processo creativo, che li hanno portati a realizzare i prodotti finali esposti in mostra.</span></p>
<p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; line-height: 15.0px; font: 11.0px Arial;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">Dieci piccole aree espositive dove ciascun designer, accanto all’oggetto finito, racconta la storia che va dal concepimento dell’idea alla sua realizzazione, attraverso una ‘collezione’ &#8211; <strong>dieci piccoli atlanti </strong>- di prototipi, schizzi, annotazioni, immagini, musica o libri dai quali sono stati influenzati, ispirati, costretti e agevolati nella progettazione. </span></p>

<p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; line-height: 15.0px; font: 11.0px Arial;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">L’idea è di esportare a Milano nei giorni del <strong>Salone Internazionale del Mobile</strong>, il pensiero forte che ha permesso di realizzare a <strong>Torino</strong> un programma di workshop dedicati al design contemporaneo nella sede del <strong>Du Parc Residence</strong>.</span></p>
<p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; line-height: 15.0px; font: 11.0px Arial;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">Con l’intenzione di dare risalto ai concetti di <strong><em>dialogo</em></strong> e <strong><em>processo</em></strong> e nella volontà di coniugarli ad una componente di <strong><em>racconto</em></strong> delle singole esperienze, <strong>Barbara Brondi</strong> e <strong>Marco Rainò</strong>, curatori della mostra, intendono realizzare una collettiva assegnando a dieci designer protagonisti dell’esperienza <strong>IN Residence</strong> altrettanti spazi di visibilità;</span></p>

Intricately shaped inlays are incorporated into chip board-transforming the material from under- to Upperlayment. In </em><strong><em>Tool inlays</em></strong><em>, the carefully cut inlays take the shape of the tools used to make the furniture piece, and in </em><strong><em>Clock inlays</em></strong><em>, an inexpensive department store clock is preciously packed in chip board with integrated inlays of clock part shapes. It is an unusual reversal of value: </em><strong><em>the packaging becomes more precious than the mass produced object it contains.</em></strong></span></p>
